With the additional severe weather today, Tuesday, February
9, 2010, all faculty, students, staff and guests who plan
to arrive on campus anytime after 4:00 p.m. today are advised
to park in central campus parking garages, regardless of permit
type, so that the parking lots can more effectively be cleared
of snow during the overnight hours. Gates will be lifted to
ease access into the garages and there will be no charge to
exit the garages.
All gates will remain up until Wednesday at 12:01 a.m.
Electronic sign boards will be positioned on campus to instruct
customers to park in garages, and T&P staff will be on
hand this afternoon and tonight to direct customers as well
as to keep garage entrance and exit lanes open.
CABS will continue to run
regularly scheduled service. Please expect service delays
throughout the day as slippery road conditions may delay buses
in and around the campus area. Visit trip.osu.edu
from your computer and mobile phone, or text OSUTRIP [space]
[bus stop #] to 41411, using the numbers listed at CABS bus
stops to receive real time bus arrival times.
Parking Impacts Caused By
Inclement Weather
Parking spaces may be reduced during winter snowfalls as a
result of lack of visible parking space pavement lines (covered
by snow and are thus, not visible), snow mounds in the parking
lots, and generally icy conditions. Customers are asked to
park in safe proximity to surrounding vehicles, so as not
to occupy more than one vehicle space during inclement weather.
Additionally, during this time, customers may consider parking
remotely and using one of the CABS bus routes listed below
to access different areas of campus.
Medical Center Access - Park in the Buckeye Lots and use
the Med
Center Express
Central Campus Access - Park on West Campus and use the Campus
Loop North, Campus
Loop South, or the North
Express.
Transportation & Parking Services would like to encourage
both motorists and pedestrians to use caution when driving
and walking to and from the campus parking lots.
Preparing For The Cold
Transportation and Parking Services and Facilities Operations
and Development are teaming up to help you prepare for inclement
weather conditions as the winter season draws near. We want
to ensure that you have the adequate tools to be prepared
when the temperature begins to drop and the weather takes
a turn for the worse.
Did You Know...?
It takes us 24 hours to clear everything after it stops snowing.
Above freezing, salt is applied sparingly throughout various
areas on campus, which are prioritized based on the number
of affected customers, location, date of snowfall (weekday
vs. weekend), and the events that are occurring on campus.
Since salt is less effective below freezing, it is not applied
when the temperature drops below 29F. Transportation &
Parking Services snow removal priorities include campus parking
lots and garages, while those of Facilities Operations and
Development include major roads, sidewalks, and docks for
heavy snowfalls.
Winter
Survival Toolkit
To prepare adequately for winter weather travel, it is recommended
that you equip your vehicle with a Winter Survival Toolkit
that contains a number of items that will help you if you
become stranded in the cold weather. Most winter survival
kits can be made at minimal cost, using items that you already
have at home. Some items to include in your winter survival
kit include the following:
- sensible shoes that provide traction
- heavy coat and gloves
- blankets
- windshield ice scraper
- travel shovel
- cat litter/rug samples
- flashlight and batteries
- jumper cables
- first aid kit
- non-perishable snack
Winter Weather Driving Tips
Winter Weather is here and The
Ohio State University Police Division would like to remind
everyone to slow down and to be prepared for adverse driving
conditions. Below are a few tips to follow when driving in
inclement weather.
- Give yourself plenty of time to get where you need to
go, as travel takes longer on slippery roads.
- Use slower acceleration, braking, and steering to reduce
your chances of losing control of your vehicle.
- Drive with your headlights on.
- Make sure that your windshield is clean.
For more winter driving tips like these, please visit the
Ohio
Department of Transportation website.
Please note that garage
ramps and stairs as well as sidewalks can be very slippery
when wet or icy. Please use caution when walking in these
conditions.
