CROSSWALK SAFETY

For Pedestrians

Respect Right of Way

  • When not in a crosswalk, yield the right of way to all traffic.
  • Leave room for the vehicle to slow or stop before stepping off the curb or entering the street.

Respect Crosswalks

  • Be aware of traffic in the area when crossing the street, even in a crosswalk.
  • Cross only at corners or marked crosswalks
  • Stop. Look left, then right, then left again before stepping into the street.
  • Wait on the sidewalk until all vehicles go by. Then recheck the roadways as described above.
  • Do not jump out, suddenly leave the curb, or run onto a crosswalk into the path of an oncoming vehicle which is so close as to constitute an immediate hazard.
  • Pedestrians on bicycles should follow the rules of the roadway.
  • Bicyclists should never ride in the crosswalk or sidewalk.

Respect Sidewalks

  • Ohio law states that pedestrians on sidewalks have the right of way.
  • Vehicles exiting parking garages or lots should yield to pedestrians crossing.

Respect Intersections

  • Use pedestrian controlled intersections.
  • The “WALK” light means you may proceed across the roadway.
  • Vehicles are to give you the right of way.
  • The “DON”T WALK” light means you should not start across the roadway, but if you are already in a crosswalk, you may continue to cross the street.

For Motorists

Respect Right of Way

  • Yield the right of way to pedestrians crossing in a crosswalk.

Respect Crosswalks

  • The Ohio State University is a pedestrian campus; therefore there are many crosswalks throughout the campus area. Be aware when driving and look for crosswalks.
  • Do not stop in a crosswalk itself. Be courteous and stop behind the stop bar so pedestrians can cross in front of you.
  • When an approaching car on the opposite side of the street stops for a pedestrian, stop your car too.

Respect Sidewalks

  • Ohio law states that pedestrians on sidewalks have the right of way.
  • Before pulling out of a parking garage or lot, stop behind the sidewalk and look both ways.
  • Never stop or park on a sidewalk or disability curb ramp.

Respect Intersections

  • Before turning at a green light, stop as pedestrians cross in front of you.
  • Be especially careful when turning right on red.
  • The “DON”T WALK” light is not a signal for vehicle right of way. Be patient and respect pedestrians who are in the crosswalk during this time.

We Are All Pedestirans

  • Remember that from time to time, we are all pedestrians crossing the street or walking on a sidewalk. A little bit of courtesy goes a long way.
